Representations of animals in art throughout history have been associated with ideas of a deeper or higher consciousness, and flying things particularly with freedom from constraint and the representation of unknown spirits. In his book Thinking Animals, Paul Sheppard says "Birds are not like ideas. That is a literary simile. Birds ARE ideas." He goes on to argue the importance of animals to the development of human intelligence. The idea of woods and the idea of birds, among the many other ideas found in the shadows of our minds seems to me particularly important right now. Ceramics as a medium is a new game for me, an exploration and perhaps an entry into something ambiguously hovering, developing and promising revelation.
